5 Reasons I use Google Docs [review]

It’s Free!  Top reason I use Google Docs is that it’s FREE.  What better way of saving money especially when on a tight budget as a student or even work.

Some initial costs of certain office suites can be really high then there are the occasional upgrades which will cost a bit more.

Auto Save

One of my favorite convenience is the Auto Save feature.  You never have to remember to go to File then Save as it automatically saves along the way either locally or on your Google Drive.  Other suites do offer this but usually at longer intervals.

If you have ever worked on a spreadsheet or other document on a desktop and your power goes out, you lose most of your work and worse the file becomes corrupt and may not be able to open it again.

Google Docs Online/Offline

People don’t understand some of the benefits of Cloud Computing and one is using online services such as Google Docs.  People don’t understand why Chromebooks have small storage, simply put you don’t need much of it as the main program is located on a server.  You no longer need to install programs directly onto your Chromebook, Chromebox or Chromebase so leaving you most of the storage for files, music and videos you want to store locally.

Another benefit of Google Docs is it’s available offline as well,

  • On your computer, open the Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides home screen.
  • In the top left, click Menu .
  • Click Settings.
  • Turn Offline on.

Google Docs is compatible with many file formats, also features a preview when available.  Some formats include:

.doc (if newer than Microsoft Office 95), .docx, .docm .dot, .dotx, .dotm, .html, plain text (.txt), .rtf, .odt, .xls (if newer than Microsoft Office 95), .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlt, .xltx, .xltm .ods, .csv, .tsv, .txt, .tab, .ppt (if newer than Microsoft Office 95), .pptx, .pptm, .pps, .ppsx, .ppsm, .pot, .potx, .potm

As you can see, it’s very flexible on many levels.

Another amazing reason I use Google Docs is convenience of availability.  You can log into your account from any PC or Phone to gain access to your documents.  Just don;t forget to logout of your Google account when finished.

I always have my Acer Chromebook 14 wherever I go and sometimes open a hot spot on my cellphone giving me access to the internet allowing me to edit my files on the go.  This comes in handy when working on projects at a friends house or work.

Hope you enjoyed my list of 5 Reason I use Google Docs.  It’s simply convenient on so many levels, hope some of what I listed above peek your interest to try Google Docs on your own 🙂

  1. With havin so much content and articles do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright violation? My blog has a lot of exclusive content I’ve either authored myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization. Do you know any techniques to help reduce content from being ripped off? I’d truly appreciate it.| а

    1. I do not, once you put it out there, I am not sure there is much anyone can do when they take your content and make it their own. They only have to change it slightly to make it their’s anyway. Thanks for taking time to leave a message.

  2. My programmer is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on various websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform. I have heard very good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!
